2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo A/T Review

Boasting an athletic yet efficient 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4, the Hyundai Veloster Turbo adds an additional 63 horsepower and 72 lb-ft, shaving its 0-60 time down to a quick 6.3 seconds. The turbo is also updated with a more aggressive design, including a rear spoiler and dual exhaust. Our blue tester came tricked out with the Ultimate Package, which adds a panoramic sunroof, backup warning sensors and a navigation system with rearview camera. For it’s sub-$28,000 as-tested price, this represents a good value in terms of features.

Hyundai is a veteran of offering more bells and whistles for less. The real test of the company’s evolution, however, is how well these models perform beyond the bells and whistles. The Veloster turbo is an intriguing car and a big improvement over the standard Veloster, but in a class full of great automobiles, it still seems to need some time in finishing school. The chassis tune doesn’t offer enough control to make the Veloster Turbo feel truly sporting, and the 1.6-liter struggles to deliver the advertised MPG under anything but the lightest of right feet. The 6-speed automatic lags behind the DSG transmissions offered by Volkswagen and the 8-speed automatics in other Hyundai products for smoothness and shift quality. Once these bugs are sorted out, however, the bug-eyed little 3-door might truly be a contender in the hot-hatch segment.
