2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550 Roadster
Luxe Hardtop Convertible
short: A powerful and luxurious two-seat convertible.
2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550 Roadster Review
Jetting from 0-60 in just 4.5 seconds, this super-fast two-seat convertible was made for high-speed drives to nowhere in particular.
However, should you get lost, Mercedes has you covered with their advanced COMAND system with navigation, alongside a plethora of other luxurious features like Harman/kardon LOGIC7 surround sound and a heating/cooling “air scarf” designed to keep occupants at an ideal temperature even with the top down.
Turbocharging, now pretty much de rigueur for luxury vehicles, helps the SL550’s 4.7-liter V8 develop 516 lb-ft of torque at a lowish 2000 rpm. This means the two-ton convertible feels instantly responsive to throttle inputs at any speed. The new V8, with stop-start technology, even burns 22 percent less fuel than before. With the 2013 redesign of the SL class, Mercedes switched to aluminium for most of the car’s construction, thereby lightening the roadster’s load by almost 300 lbs. The difference in driving dynamics is noticeable, to say the least. Thanks to tightened steering and a better weight-distribution, the new SL acts like it enjoys being tossed along curvy back roads. No longer the floaty two-seat lounge of SLs past, the current SL550 has just enough sport in its character to inspire the confidence its owners will no doubt expect considering the six-figure price tag.
