2013 Volkswagen Tiguan SE Review

Built on the same chassis as the Jetta and Golf, the Volkswagen Tiguan offers a small car feel in a roomier, more versatile package that works great for families. Powered by the same 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected 4 cylinder as the venerable GTI, this compact crossover provides decent acceleration and lively handling. Our Night Blue Metallic tester impressed with a color touch-screen navigation system, a media device interface with iPod connectivity and Sirius satellite radio, as well as a distinct European flair. Interior materials have VW’s usual high quality feel, as do the controls for the infotainment and HVAC systems. The seats are supportive and comfortable, and the high seating position means that visibility is fine. I did, however, miss the contoured sport-seats of the GTI, as well as the available plaid upholstery.
On the road, the Tiguan feels solid and planted, much like slightly raised, somewhat enlarged GTI. Volkswagen’s excellent DSG 6-speed twin clutch transmission is one of the best of its kind on the market, making snappy downshifts and lightning-quick upshifts. With its help, the 200 horsepower engine is able to hustle this 3600 pound crossover to 60 mph in a decent 8.2 seconds. This TSI turbo is also one of the best sounding 4-cylinder engines around, in my opinion.

Warranty/Service: 3-year/36,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty; 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty; 12-year/unlimited-mile corrosion perforation warranty; 3-year/36,000-mile 24-hour roadside assistance; 3-year/36,000-mile Volkswagen Carefree Maintenance
