2014 Honda CR-V EX-L AWD
Big Value, Small SUV
short: A value-oriented, fuel-efficient small SUV.
2014 Honda CR-V EX-L AWD Review
Debuting in the late 1990s, the Honda CR-V was one of the first compact SUVs, and it remains a torchbearer for its class thanks to its thoughtful design and value-oriented approach. Powered by a 2.4-liter inline-4, the 2014 Honda CR-V achieves up to 30 mpg highway, while the its Eco Assist function configures the engine and other systems for maximum efficiency when activated. Our EX-L-level tester came handsomely equipped at just over $30,000, with amenities like leather-trimmed seats and a navigation system with rearview camera. Fit and finish are up to Honda’s usual high standards. The front seats are comfortable for long drives and the sound system works well. On the road, the Honda CR-V is composed and quiet, going about its business with very little drama. Though buyers seeking sports-car driving thrills in their compact SUVs should look elsewhere, the CR-V is a refined and competent driver, one which definitely sticks closer to the “car” side of the car/truck balance among SUVs. A rarity in these days of thick pillars and swoopy shapes, we found the CR-V to have very good outward visibility, making the rearview camera almost superfluous. Though with only 185 horsepower, acceleration is leisurely, the CR-V nonetheless remains a practical, economical and easy-to-live-with compact SUV.
